Honorable Prime Minister of India and Honorable External Affairs minister, we need your leadership in expediting the Nalanda University Amendment Bill in the Parliament.
In 2013 Nalanda University amendment bill was first introduced in Parliament, but it was referred to the Standing Committee on External Affairsby by Upper house (Rajya Sabha) . The parliamentary panel had raised concerns on certain clauses in the bill including that seats in the governing board should not go to highest bidders among Asean countries.
Panel recommendation was accepted by government – but it has not been tabled in parliament, so far. This inordinate delay is putting future of Nalanda University and promise of country at the East Asia Summit, “an intellectual resource for the entire continent” at risk and an international embarrassment. We need government to fulfill this long cherished aspiration of millions in reviving the old glory of Nalanda University on global stage.
