Honorable Prime Mister of India and Honorable External Affairs minister, please expedite Nalanda University Amendment Bill in the Parliament.
Background of issue: In 2013 Nalanda University amendment bill was first introduced in Parliament, but it was referred by Upper house (Rajya Sabha) to the Standing Committee on External Affairs. The parliamentary panel had pointed out to many flaws in the bill including that seats in the governing board should not go to highest bidders among Asean countries/ Buddhist countries. All recommendations were accepted by government and the amendment bill was modified – but it has not been tabled in parliament, so far.
This delay is putting future of Nalanda University and promise of country at the East Asia Summit, “an intellectual resource for the entire continent” at risk and an international embarrassment.
